The American University (Higher Education Foundation) is a private, co-educational doctoral institution situated in a residential neighborhood of northwest Washington, D.C. THE AU are classified as an R2 Institution, ranked “Doctoral: Higher Research Activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. We are a Methodist affiliated institution.

The American University has eight schools and colleges: the School of International Service, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication, School of Professional and Extended Studies, School of Public Affairs, School of Education, and the AU College of Law (AUCL). It has over 177 programs, including 80 bachelor’s degrees, 87 master’s degrees, and 10 doctoral degrees, as well as JD, LLM, and SJD programs. THE AU’s student body numbers over 13,000 and represents all 50 U.S. states and 186 countries; around a fifth of students are international. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity”.

Courses run on a 15-week semester basis in fall and spring, with shorter summer-term classes. In addition, we offer study-abroad programs and alternative breaks. 91 percent of our undergraduates participate in at least one internship during their time at AU, and 54 percent of students participate in study abroad. Our undergraduate freshman retention rate is 87 percent, and 80 percent of freshmen graduated from AU within six years.

THE ACCREDITING COUNCIL

The Accrediting council is comprised of ten members. Five members are from ACISC™-accredited institutions and are elected by institutions that hold ACISC™ accreditation status. Five members are appointed by the Council to represent the public. At least two public members of the Council must be academics, defined by ACISC™ as an individual who works full time at an educational institution and who actively teaches, delivers educational content to students and/or engages in educational research related to the institution's mission.
